- FOUNDED
- 1921, by a group largely made up of New York Athletic Club members. Both courses opened in June 1923.
- DESIGNER
- A.W. Tillinghast — the West and the East, built concurrently on the 280-acre Mamaroneck property, fresh off his dual-course work at Baltusrol.
- THE NAME
- Taken from the winged foot of Mercury — the sculpture set into the lobby floor of the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan.
- THE INSTRUCTION
- “Give us a man-sized course.” — the founders, hiring Tillinghast; as attributed by pgatour.com and golf.com.
- THE WEST
- Par 72, 7,426 yards from the club’s tips. Major championships are contested here.
- RESTORATION
- Gil Hanse, with the club — back nine 2016, front nine fall 2017 — expanding the greens back to their 1920s sizes, roughly 15–25% larger than for the 2006 U.S. Open, working from period photographs.
- CHARACTER
- Elevated, pear-shaped greens with severe false fronts; deep flanking bunkers that pinch approach angles; narrow, tree-lined fairways bordered by thick rough.
